Point of Vision Artist Statement:

Point of Vision is an experience crafted through the intersection of multiple mediums used by Gregory Ito, co-owner of the Ever Gold Gallery and co-founder/editor of the San Francisco Arts Quarterly (SFAQ).  Originally trained as a painter at the San Francisco Art Institute, Ito is presenting a body of work including painting, photography, sculpture, and installation. Together, these works aim to operate on a wider horizon of methods used to present and transmit conceptualized ideas surrounding human experiences with the never ending shifts between day, night, and the moments in between (dawn and dusk).  Ito utilizes the dialogue created between the relationship of object and image to steer a new sense of place within the viewer. Celestial forms (Sun, Moon, and Earth) all become recurring subjects seen in the work, in both literal and abstracted interpretations. The orientation of humankind is a common theme in the work, allowing viewers to place themselves in the ever expanding universe we inhabit, with the intentions of opening new avenues for individuals to experience the sense of awe that life provides. Ito views his practice as a test to present monumental ideas with the goal of shifting the collective consciousness that we have toward the world around us, and appreciate the time we have been given. It is “time” that has been commodified, and segmented into the modern day calendar, used as a tool of measuring the progress of culture. Ito's work is a deconstruction of these ideals. Diagrammatic images as well as objects are used to suggest new ways of viewing this concept of time, and work to break the conventional grid of the monthly calendar. The work created for this show acts as a catalyst in expanding the “point of vision” that we all hold in our concepts of time. Ito is inspired by human euphoria, and the innate connection our existence has with the eternal; the spiritual and sacred connection to the monumental forces that provide for humanly existence.

Point of Vision solo exhibition opening August 6th 2011

“The scene of a setting sun is one that we can relate to, watching the Sun fall gracefully past the horizon line, with gradients of color passing through the vast skies above.  It is ephemeral moments such as these that we truly experience the passing of time, and allow the formation of new directions in our human consciousness of our understanding of the world around us” -Gregory Ito

“The spiritual and sacred have a particularly rare power of transcendence that is very uncommon in the consumerist society we are all a participant in our contemporary times.”  -Gregory Ito
